Honoring Emily

The Rawles have had more than their fair share of setbacks and tragedy but continue to do what make them most passionate, and they do it well. In 1988, Bill suffered a broken neck in a jumping accident and was given very little hope for a “normal” life going forward. He is not able to ride like he once did but manages to run all the farm equipment on the property and keeps quite busy with his responsibilities.

In 1999, the Rawles lost their oldest daughter, Emily, suddenly. Emily, a USDF Gold medalist, was well beyond what one would call an accomplished rider and had a true passion for the horse business, according to sister Ellie. “She loved kids, she loved teaching them. She was truly in the business and was much more of a show rider than I am. I enjoy the nuts and bolts. Emily had more show polish.” The Rawle family honors Emily's member every year at Dressage at Devon with a the Watermark Perpetual Trophy in her honor, awarded to the highest placed FEI Rider who was a Pony Club graduate.
