2007 Palm Beach Dressage Derby Courtney King Once Again Busy Collecting Ribbons by Lyndee Kemmet
“It’s amazing,” King said, noting that in a class that large one is happy just to be near the top. “But having the two horses be first and second is amazing.” It was the first time the two horses had gone head-to-head in competition and King wondered how it would go. In her view, both are high-quality horses and on any given day, either one could emerge the winner. As horses go, Rendevous is a bit of mix. The 17.2-hand, 12-year-old Warmblood mare was bought last April by Francine Walker who handed the reins over to King. The mare is part Arabian, part Thoroughbred and half Austrian Warmblood. She’s a mix of all breeds and she has personality plus. She is such a funny and intriguing,” King said. King admitted she rode Mythilus, a 13-year-old Dutch gelding owned by Richard Malloch, a bit more conservatively at the Derby than she did two weeks ago at the Gold Coast Opener Revisted, where the pair were the big winners in Prix St. Georges. Mythilus (by Ferro) got a bit disturbed in the warm-up and made it clear that he was ready to go and since he has a history of running through her hands, King was cautious. “Last week I could really put the burner under him,” she said. “I was like, you can kind of go, but don’t take over.” She was “thrilled” with Rendezvous. Was bought last April by Francine. Is quarter Arabian, quarter Tho, half Austrian WB. He’s a mix of all breeds and she has personality plus. She is such a funny and intriguing. She just has so much personality. We’re just developing a relationship. Sire was an Austrian WB. |
