Top Riders Differ in Opinion on the New Format

Julie Richards on Jacob Two TwoAdded U.S. rider Julie Richards, who stood 36 th after the cross country on Jacob Two Two. “I’m still trying to figure out the format. I think there is a lot in the cool down.“ Her only concern which others also mentioned was that it not become a dressage and show jumping competition, since the basis of Eventing is truly the cross country phase.

Added U.S. rider Darren Chiacchia who rode Windfall 2 to the 12 th position. “We are all learning as we go.”

Germany ’s Bettina Hoy, who stands second after cross country aboard Ringwood Cockatoo, added, “If this is the way to remain in the Olympics then this is what we have to do.”

Third place finisher and U.S. rider Kim Severson added, “I like this new format. It saves a lot of energy for the riders as well because we don’t have to walk the Roads & Tracks or the Steeplechase. It might help the horses last a little longer in the sport.”

John Williams on CarrickTeammate and firefighter Amy Tryon, who finished 22 nd on Poggio II echoed Serverson hoping that this new format would be good for the “longevity of the horse.”

Some thought the course was “a little soft,” noted U.S. rider John Williams, who finished 19 th on Carrick. “My horse went around very easily.”

Others thought is was perfect for the Olympics. “I think this is exactly what an Olympic course should be,” commented Touzaint.

After cross country France took over the lead (113.40), Germany stands 2 nd (119.60), Great Britain is third (125.60) and the U.S. is less than a rail behind for fourth (129.60).
