Benz Tops 2003 Legacy Reining Breeders Sale
Sale Posts $15,301 Average Aubrey, TX - October 21, 2003 - At the 2003 Legacy Reining Breeders Sale, held October 19, the high seller was Silver Benz, purchased for $47,000 by the Silver Benz Syndicate of Aubrey, Texas. Consigned by BiTerra Quarter Horses of Weimer, Texas, with Tom McCutcheon as Agent, Silver Benz, a yearling stallion by Smart Starbuck, is out of SIlversnow Pinestep, the dam of Great Resolve (Einstein). McCutcheon noted, "We are very excited about this colt. He as everything we look for in a show horse and the potential and pedigree to be a sire". Lance Griffin, the 2003 National Reining Breeders Classic Non Pro Champion, bought another of the sale's standout lots, Von Whiz, a son of Topsail Whiz out of Von Freckles, dam of NRHA Futurity Champion Von Reminic. Dell Hendricks was the agent for owner, Sally Broten for Von Whiz, which sold for $36,500. The high-selling filly was Dun Its Macarena, consigned by McQuay Stables and purchased by Jurgen Wurzbacher." Dun Its Macarena, which sold for $28,000, is a daughter of Hollywood Dun It out of Lemacs Little Girl by Doc's Hickory. There were 54 horses auctioned, with 12 passouts. Total gross sales were $642,650, for a sale average of $15,301.19. Sale organizers were pleased with the sale. Tim McQuay noted, "As breeders, we were happy with the sale and we'll be back next year on Sunday, October 17 with the Fourth Annual Sale." Most feel that the growth of this breeders' production sale is due, in part, to the great success of its former consignees. The progeny of the first sale, held in 2001, came of age in 2003 and there have already been four Futurity winners from that group of horses. Dell Hendricks rode Starbucks Sidekick to the 2003 All American Quarter Horse Congress Reining Futurity Championship, earning $27,462. The good gray horse, owned by Doug Adair of Mesa, Arizona, was also the Co-Champion of the Kansas Reining Horse Association Sunflower Slide Futurity held in August. A Legacy Sale horse won again at the 2003 Tradition Futurity, Luke Gagnon won the Open Tradition championship on Lil Santana, a son of Lil Ruf Peppy out of Alicia Rose, owned by Equine Plus of Boucherville, Quebec. Besides the Sunflower Slide and Tradition Futurity Open wins, Mandy McCutcheon rode another Legacy Sale horse, Jasmines Ruf Blonde, a daughter of Lil Ruf Peppy out of Miss Jasmine Jac, to the 2003 Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association Non Pro Stallion Stakes Championship. All yearlings in the Legacy Sale are enrolled in the NRBC and the sale is strictly a black-type sale. Every broodmare in the sale is either a performer or producer. Likewise, all the sale yearlings are out of producing or performing mares. The individuals who make up the Legacy Reining Breeders Group are some of the most prominent reiners and breeders in the industry. Tim McQuay is the National Reining Horse Association's All Time Leading Rider and McQuay Stables is the home of $3 Million Sire, Hollywood Dun It. Pete and Tamra Kyle's Whitesboro, Texas Ranch is home to Reining and Cow Horse World Champion Tejons Peppy Doc, while Dell Hendricks Reining Horses is home to NRBC Champion Starlights Wrangler and Dunnit In Hollywood. Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses and Green Valley Farm in Aubrey, Texas, are home to Lil Ruf Peppy and Smart Starbuck, as well as USET Champion Conquistador Whiz.
