Markus Beerbaum of Germany Wins $100,000 COSEQUIN® Wellington Finale

Markus Beerbaum and Lady Weingard March 12, 2000 - Wellington, FL- Markus Beerbaum, a member of Germany's 1998 Gold Medal World Championship team, was in the winner's circle aboard the 13-year-old Oldenburg mare, Lady Weingard, in the $100,000 Cosequin Palm Beach Finale Grand Prix, the culminating event of the Cosequin Winter Equestrian Festival stay at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club.

Beerbaum was one of four qualifiers from the 40-horse field to advance to the tiebreaker jump-off round, where he was the only one clear over the eight-jump track in 46.44 seconds, beating U.S. Equestrian Team veteran Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI, aboard Liberty, a 9-year-old Dutch-bred mare.

Laura Kraut and Liberty Kraut finished with the fastest jump-off time of 44.44 seconds, but had one knockdown for a penalty score of four faults. Third place went to Eric Lamaze of Canada, aboard the 10-year-old Hanovarian Raphael, who finished with four faults and in 46.53 seconds.

Beerbaum, who earned $30,000 for the victory, has been competing at the 2000 Cosequin Winter Equestrian Festival for the first time and finished strong. "I started off slow, but the last three weeks we did well," said the 29-year-old Beerbaum. "Lady Weingard jumped as well as she can jump (today). She was really fresh. In the jump-off, we decided to start off safe through the first few jumps and then go as fast as we can. That put enough pressure on the last two riders."

Lady Weingard's Breeding Information
Lady Weingard's sire is Landadel (Landgraf x Farnese), sire of FEI jumpers such as FRH Landdame/Franke Sloothaak, Little Gun/Helena Weinberg, Dobel's Luigi/Otto Becker, and FEI dressage horses Jonggor's Leonardo/Gonnelien Rothenberger-Gordijn, Rosemount Showtyme/Kristy Oatley-Nist).

Her dam, Weingard (by Weinstern x Gotthard) is full sister to three geldings that were sold at the Vechta auctions in the 80ies, She also produced Lady Weingard's brothers Libertas (approved stallion at the Gestuet Reinsehlen stud 80 km south of Hamburg) Lindberg, champion stallion in South Africa, and - most importantly - Landkaiser, 1995 Oldenburg champion stallion (2 1/2 year-olds). He stands stud at the Boeckmann's.

Landkaiser's dam line is based on a Hannoverian line. All horses named above were as foals sold at the Vechta auction. The breeder is Heiner Schuermann. He lives in Ahlhorn, a small village some 65 kilometers southwest of Bremen.
