Elise Haas USET Athlete of the Month January 2000

Elise Haas and Mr. Blue Gladstone, NJ - January 24, 2000 - Elise Haas of Sausalito, CA, was named the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Athlete of the Month for January following her victory at the Inge Bank Prize Grand Prix at CSI-W Amsterdam, Holland in December. Haas was the youngest rider, the first woman and the first American ever to win the Grand Prix at Amsterdam since it started in 1978. With this latest honor, she is now the first USET athlete of the new century to win the Athlete of the month. The twenty year old Haas' impressive victory was so noteworthy on many levels for herself and for the United States that the USET decided to honor her in January for her December performance.

Following an already impressive start to the 1999 season, Haas won the Grand Prix Edouard Leclec in Cannes, France on Aphnee Du Marais in June. She topped an international field of 27 entries which included Olympic veterans from Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Ireland and Brazil. In the fall of 1999, she was named Leading Rider at CSI-W Helsinki, Finland, thanks in part to the USET Show Jumping Developing Rider grant she received in 1999.

Elise Haas and Mr. Blue The Developing Rider program provides grants for promising riders to compete in Europe as part of USET rider tours. European tours provide unique and challenging experience for riders. Haas has benefited greatly from her experience in Europe. On the 1999 USET Developing Rider tour, she helped the USET to Nation Cup wins in Falsterbo, Sweden and Budapest, Hungary.

Haas first received attention in 1995 when she won the Individual Bronze medal for show jumping at the North American Young Rider Championships. In 1997 when she won the BET/USET Show Jumping Talent Search Finals-West, presented by Sooner Trailer. In April 1999, she served notice that she will be a force to be reckoned with on the Grand Prix circuit by placing third in one of the nation's biggest Grand Prix events, the $150,000 Budweiser American Invitational in Tampa.
