Shakira Tops Six-Year-Old Division at Halton Valley Mid-Summer Classic
As both the owner and rider of Shakira, a grey Belgian Warmblood mare by Coronado, Munro of Tottenham, ON, took top honours in the Six-Year-Old Division by being one of two horses to go clear in the first round to advance to the jump-off where he again posted a faultless performance in the fastest time to take the win. Competing on the grand prix field, the course included an added test as horses were required to negotiate a bank complex before facing a triple combination. The only other rider to post double clear rounds was Hugh Graham riding Jamestown, a bay selle francais stallion by Quidam de Revel. Owned by KingRidge Stables of King City, ON, and bred in Canada by Epstein Equestrian Enterprises, Jamestown was the winner of the Five-Year-Old Division at the 2002 Tournament of Champions in Newmarket, ON. Michael Grinyer of Campbellville, ON, finished the day with two horses in the top five. Riding Rio’s Roxanne, a Canadian Sport Horse mare, Grinyer placed third while his second entry in the Six-Year-Old Division, Rivalin, an Oldenburg mare, was fifth. Both Canadian-bred mares are by Rio Grande who stands at Augustin Walch’s W. Charlot Farms. Also cracking into the top five was Liz Gayford of Markham, ON, who finished in fourth place overall riding Southwind, a Canadian Warmblood gelding owned by Gayford and bred in Alberta by Chris Gould’s Touchstone Farm. At the mid-way mark in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series, Sharika has moved to the top of the standings with 35 points but shares the lead with Rio’s Roxanne. Also very close behind with a total of 34 points is Picilipo, a recently imported Dutch Warmblood by Lester who is owned by Van Reenen Stables and ridden by Peter Gisborn. In the Five-Year-Old Division, Figaro enjoyed the win with Natalie Smith of Claremont, ON. Owned by Aeden Ierullo, Figaro is a grey Canadian-bred Hannoverian gelding. Taking second place was Lauren Hayes of Cheltenham, ON, who rode Sheffield, a Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Iron Horse Farm. In third was Grinyer and Rio’s Tasha, a Canadian Sport Horse mare by Rio’s Bronco who is enjoying her first season of showing. In the overall standings for the Five-Year-Old Division, Kaiser de la Cour, a chestnut selle francais stallion by Narcos II, continues to lead for owner Mill Creek Stables. With 50 points, Kaiser de la Cour has a ten-point advantage over Ruben, a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Concorde who is owned by Scanmar Portfolios and ridden by Marni Von Schalburg. Figaro moves into third position with a total of 39 points. KingRidge Stables scored a hat trick in the Four-Year-Old Division, taking all three top spots. Ridden by Graham, a Canadian Olympian who in fact showed a total of six horses in the Four-Year-Old Division, Déjà vu 3E took top honours. The Canadian Sport Horse gelding is by KingRidge’s own stallion, Class Action, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood by Libero H. In second place was Double Diamond, also a breeding stallion for KingRidge Stables. Registered as a Belgian Warmblood, Double Diamond is by the Quidam de Revel son, Nabab de Reve, while his dam, Black Diamond by Chin Chin, is a KingRidge-owned grand prix competitor. Third placed Dividend 3E is a Canadian Sport Horse gelding by yet another KingRidge Stables sire, Money Talks. Mill Creek Stables of Cambridge, ON, took fourth place with Charlie’s Angel and fifth with Robert Montgomery. Both horses are by Rio Grande and were shown by Simon McCarthy. In the overall standings for the Four-Year-Old Division, two KingRidge Stables horses have switched position. Dividend 3E has overtaken the lead with 51 points while Democrat 3E is now in second place with 48.5. Charlie’s Angel is in third position with a total of 41 points. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series was created to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumper prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development as four, five or six year olds. This careful development allows the young horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. In the Four and Five-Year-Old Divisions, horses are judged solely on their performance and style. In the Six-Year-Old Division, the top ten horses return for a jump-off, carrying forward any faults accumulated in the first round. In order to tabulate the Series standings, points are awarded according to the World Cup system with the number of points given based on the number of horses entered in each class. Proud supporters of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series include Amerigo Saddles, Canadian Sport Horse Association, Canterbrooke Farms, Cavalier, Dave Hopps, Gary Cooper Chev Olds, Grande Farms, KingRidge Stables, Michael Grinyer Stables, Mill Creek Farms, Mill Creek Stables, TD Canada Trust, Turtle Jack Grill House restaurants, Twin City Dry Storage and W. Charlot Farms. Three events remain on the Ontario calendar prior to the National Finals to be held at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show in November. The next event in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series will take place on Friday, August 8, at the Collingwood Festival in Collingwood, ON.
