Two Weekends Complete, One To Go For ASPCA Maclay Regional Qualifying

New York, NY – September 21, 2004 – The field of top junior riders continues to be narrowed down for the 2004 ASPCA Maclay National Finals as two additional Regional Finals were completed on Saturday and Sunday, September 18th and 19th. The final three regions will be contested this coming weekend, September 25th and 26th.

The Finals will be held November 3-7, 2004, at The Metropolitan National Horse Show at Pier 94 and the Show Piers on the Hudson Complex in New York City.

This year’s ASPCA Maclay National Finals are scheduled to be televised nationally on Fox Sports following the event, adding to the prestige of this long running national horsemanship championship.

Ribbon winners over the years have come from across the country. The states that have produced the winning junior rider over the past 20 years of ASPCA Maclay competition include Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio, Kentucky, and North Carolina, while multiple winners have come from New York and Canada. Florida and California have been the most prolific producers over the past 20 championships, sending four riders each to the national title since 1984.

Last year’s ASPCA Maclay National Champion, Californian Mathew Sereni, now a second year student at Cal-Poly at San Luis Obispo, said following his 2003 victory, “This is my last show as a junior and a win in this class is just a great way to finish out my career.”

California riders qualifying through Region 8 this year includes a mix of new faces and experienced riders, three of whom have garnered seven top eight finishes in the national finals over the past two seasons. Nicole Adamson and Megan Edrick, the top two qualifiers, each picked up a sixth place finish in the ASPCA Maclay Finals over the past two years – Adamson in 2002 and Edrick last year.

This year, Region 2, which takes in the areas of New York and New Jersey, has sent a strong and seasoned field to the finals. The 10 qualified riders have collected 21 top eight finishes in national horsemanship finals over the past two seasons. This region includes Brianne Goutal, winner of the 2004 Ronnie Mutch Equitation Championship, Addison Phillips, the 2003 Washington International National Champion, and Blythe Marano who finished in the ribbons in all four year-end national championships last year. All three of these riders were in the top 10 at the ASPCA Maclay Finals last year in New York.

The ASPCA Maclay Finals have long been a proving ground for future top international stars. Notable equestrians who have ridden to victory in the ASPCA Maclay Finals include 1960 Olympic Gold Medallist William Steinkraus, 1984 Los Angeles Olympians Conrad Homfeld and Leslie Howard, 2004 Athens Olympic Team Silver Medallist Peter Wylde, and 2004 Athens Olympic Show Jumping Team Coach Frank Chapot.

The panel of judges for the prestigious ASPCA-Maclay has been finalized, and officiating in 2004 will be the 1965 winner of the ASPCA Maclay Finals, Chrystine Tauber of Pottersville, NC; Scott Williamson of Middleburg, VA; and 1996 Olympic Course Designer Linda Allen of Salinas, CA.

The Metropolitan National Horse Show will return to Pier 94 and the Show Piers on the Hudson Complex in Manhattan for the second consecutive year. Pier 94 and the Show Piers Complex has served as a location for major motion picture filming and fashion shows, played host to many top-class events including gift shows and entertainment extravaganzas, and now offers an innovative and unique site for some of the world’s best equestrians.

Many changes to this year’s event have been introduced to further enhance the overall experience of both the spectator and the exhibitor.

The arena size has been widened, schooling areas have been enlarged, and spectator seating will be situated at both ends of the arena. A specialty boutique area will be located ringside. The Diamond Horse Shoe Club will feature catering by Tavern on the Green, one of New York City’s finest eateries.
