November 30, 2006 Margie Engle Retires Las Marismas Challenge Trophy with Win in $15,000 National Horse Show Speed Classic on Hidden Creek’s Wapino
Engle’s first win was in 2001 on Hidden Creek’s Perin, and the second victory came in 2004 with Hidden Creek’s Charlie Brown. The trophy, donated by Mr. and Mrs. David E.P. Lindh, has to be won three times by the same rider for permanent possession. The NHS Speed Classic was a Time First Round format with a time allowed of 76 seconds and was designed by Jose Gamarra of Venezuela. The height was a maximum of 1.50m, and Engle took home $4,500 for first place. The class had 42 entries. There were only seven clear rounds, a round with one time fault, and fifteen riders had four faults. Riding out of the 16th spot in the order, 16 year old Aimee Aron and Killigrew’s Attraction, owned by Kinloch Enterprises, set the time to beat with a clear round in 64.78 seconds. Five trips later, Engle and Hidden Creek’s Wapino set out on the course. Wapino’s gigantic stride and Engle’s good turns gave them an advantage. They crossed the timers clear in a time of 58.90 seconds, almost six seconds faster than Aron. Engle’s teammate from this year’s silver medal effort at the World Equestrian Games gave her a run for her money. McLain Ward and Larioso, owned by Ward and Blue Chip Bloodstock, grazed over the fences, and Ward rode out of stride on a fast pace. They had Engle’s time in 56.96 seconds, but had an unfortunate four faults. The next competitor to challenge Engle was Jose Rega on Cinoa, owned by Victoria D’Agostino, who rode in the 30th spot. They blazed around the course clear, but were just off the pace in 60.76 seconds, a time that would hold up for second place. Rega tallied the last clear round of the class. “I was very pleased with the way he went,” Engle described. “He’s a deceiving horse. I didn’t feel super fast, but he covers a lot of ground, and he turns beautifully. He’s a huge horse, but he rides as nice as any small horse I’ve ever ridden. He has a lovely mouth. In both directions, he turns so nice. He’s scopey enough that I can turn back to things without a lot of room, and he can get out of it very well.” While most people would not be surprised to see Engle in the winner’s circle, her winning a speed class on Wapino was a little more unusual. “I don’t think I’ve ever done him in a speed. Usually I only do to prepare him for the grand prix,” she remarked. “[His owner] Mike [Pulaski] was here to watch, and he hasn’t gotten to see him for awhile. I thought I’d take a little bit of a shot. I believe this is his first real speed class victory.” Rega got the ride on Cinoa when the 17 year old mare’s owner, Victoria D’Agostino, stopped riding due to pregnancy. Cinoa has been under Rega’s training for four years, and he is her usual exercise rider and D’Agostino’s trainer, along with Lauren Hough. Rega showed Cinoa in Kentucky this year for the first time. “Her owner used to do the high amateurs with her. I’m used to riding her always on the flat, but I had never showed her. Lauren jumped her before my owners bought her,” Rega explained. “I’m very pleased with my horse also. She’s an old mare, but she’s going very well. There were not too many clears, but when I saw Margie’s time was very short, I tried to go as fast as possible. It went well. It was a pleasant course.” The $80,000 Young Jumper Championships® International (YJC) started their divisions today with a Time First Round class. The course designer for the deNemethy Ring is Philip J. DeVita. The YJC is split into three divisions: Five Year Old, Six Year Old, and Seven & Eight Year Old. The Five Year Old Class today had prize money worth $1,500, and the division total will be $20,000. Today’s class for each division, combined with tomorrow’s class, count cumulatively towards qualification in Sunday’s final and to determine the final’s order of go. The winner of the Five Year Old class was Uno 002, ridden by Laura Kraut and owned by Mary Moricoli. Kraut and Moricoli share riding and showing duties on the talented young gelding. Kraut had not ridden him since March, and he had not showed since July. Kraut pointed out that the inexperienced horse has matured this year. “He’s changed so much. He’s so much stronger. Mary worked all summer getting him more broke. She’s taught him more about going fast,” she said. Kraut was full of praise for the up and coming talent. “He’s such an amazing horse. Nothing scares him, and he’s got so much talent that we thought he was getting bored at this level. We gave him the time to grow up a little. He’s a big horse; he’s filled out some,” she noted. “He obviously hasn’t forgotten what he’s supposed to do because he went right in and marched around. He goes in every time and tries to do the right thing. He’s going to be a famous horse. At what, I don’t know. He’s got that attitude that he always wants to go in and win.” Kraut was also quick to point out how helpful the YJC classes are for the jumper industry in America. “I love it. I’ve tried to support it wholeheartedly. We can convince owners to buy young horses, and you have a goal for them. I think people like to have something they work towards. It gives you two opportunities to win some prize money and show off the horse you bought. I think it’s very important for our sport here.” The winner of the $2,500 Six Year Old Class today was Mill Creek Sandhya, ridden by Sergio Campos for Mill Creek Stables. It was a new ride for Campos, but the talented mare has had experience in the YJC classes in Canada with rider Tonya Henning. The horse was sent to Campos two weeks ago, and this is their second show together. “I’m having a lot of fun riding this horse. I think she’ll be a future grand prix horse,” he asserted. Although they do not know each other very well, Campos felt that they clicked immediately. “I like fast horses. She’s a little hot, and that’s my style,” he said. The victory in the $2,500 Seven & Eight Year Old Class today went to Varnese, ridden by Charlie Jayne for Alex R. Jayne. Varnese was one of four horses that the Jayne family imported last year from Europe. Jayne and his sister Maggie have both ridden the gelding, but Varnese spent most of this year with Maggie Jayne in Illinois. They competed in the 1.30m classes and in the YJC classes. Since Maggie could not attend the National Horse Show, Charlie took over the showing responsibilities. Jayne felt that today’s class would go well. “He’s done the little Midwest grand prix and has gotten some good ribbons. I felt pretty competitive going into today,” he acknowledged. “He went around pretty smooth today. I felt the turns worked out nice, and it had a good flow to it. It was nice for a first course. Tomorrow I’ll probably go slower for a clear to try and qualify for Sunday.” Both the Six Year Old and Seven & Eight Year Old divisions are competing for a total of $30,000 in prize money this week. Their final will be held on Sunday in the Internationale Arena. The 123rd National Horse Show and Family Festival continues tomorrow with jumper action in two rings. The deNemethy Arena will host the Welcome Stake classes for the Children’s, Palm Beach Daily News Adult Amateur, Amateur-Owner, and Junior Jumper divisions. The YJC will hold their second class of the division following those stake classes. The main event in the Internationale Arena will be the Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championship, CSI-W (Phase I), which is scheduled to start after the hunter presentations and Ladies’ Hunter Side Saddle class, which begin at 7 p.m. The class is a World Cup qualifier and is the first phase of the championship, which concludes with another $50,000 grand prix phase on Sunday at 2 p.m.
